Open Source Citrix Alternative

Many IT departments are feeling the current economic crisis and have seen their budgets drastically reduced. Therefore the press on the need of creativity can be substantial.

In these cases the use of the free hypervisors as an alternative can be quite beneficial.

If you can not afford to pay licenses for VMware ESX or other solutions, these are some of the freely distributed hypervisors that you can download and use:

VMware Server: Version 2.0 has an endless array of new features and can be installed on several versions of Windows, Linux, and on virtually any hardware.

VMware ESXi: This is the “thin” VMware ESX. ESXi Installable version is ready for installation in a variety of hardware from different vendors. This one is our team favorite.

Microsoft Hyper-V: This Hypervisor has started as part of Windows 2008 X64, though the new Microsoft Hyper-V Server can be installed separately without the need to buy Windows 2008 Licenses.

Citrix XenServer Citrix XenServer is available free of charge and is an ideal platform to begin to virtualize servers.

Xen® hypervisor Xen hypervisor is a great open source Hypervisor. It’s distributed with many Linux distros including Redhat, Suse, & Ubuntu.

VirtualBox VirtualBox is a powerful Open Source x86 and AMD64/Intel64 Virtualization Product. VirtualBox has been mainly developed by SUN.

Between these six products IT departments with tight budget, can save by starting to virtualaize at a zero dollar cost.  You have the products named in here; it’s about the time to download them & test which one best fit your environment.
