For those of you parents, especially those whose children take medication for ADHD, we want you to be aware of the following information.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC), only surprised everyone by reporting a study which estimates that each year against cough and cold medicines send about 7091 children in emergency rooms of hospitals, representing 5.7% of all emergency room visits for medications in this age group.
The CDC knows if there have been deaths as a result. The information was simply not available in the archives. But past studies have revealed a number of deaths among very young children who were inadvertently given too much medication.
For children whose symptoms were reported, allergic reactions such as hives and itching were most common, and neurological symptoms like drowsiness and lack reaction were next. Most of the drugs involved were liquid combinations of cough and cold, the CDC researchers said.
They report that some 4600 children have taken the drugs without supervision, and about 3500 children aged 2 to 5. Another 1,500 were children under 2 , who had over-prescription cough and cold medicines cons that the FDA considers too dangerous for young children.
The CDC offers the following advice to Parents:
- Do not let the medicines your child may be able to reach them.
- Do not tell children that medicine is candy.
- Do not take adult medications in front of his son.
- Do not give children under 2 years for drugs older children.
- Get rid of old cold and cough medicines cons for children under 2 years.
There two Important for parents:
- The cough and cold products for children a taste of candy, or better. I like the taste too. And their children. It makes everything very easy for our children to take drugs even if we are not at all;
- These drugs are not candy. This are drugs that should not be administered to infants. This small warning label that says "for children under 3 years – consult your doctor" NO say: "Oh, go ahead and give it to them."
More disturbing is the message that there were over 1,000 cases where parents gave the proper dosage and an allergic reaction or some other problem developed.
We must remember that cough and cold medications may have affect the central nervous system and, sometimes, this effect is unpredictable. We all know that children who go to sleep when Benadryl, and other children spin like a top. Parents, we must be cautious.
Parents should take into account drug interactions between coughs and colds and other drugs that the child can take, especially medication for ADHD, depression or anxiety. Always consult your doctor. Or better yet, talk to a pharmacist. Parents, we become more cautious.
